Although Jordan is in many ways far more moderate than other Arab states, it is still important to dress with sensitivity to local customs and beliefs. It is advisable that you do not wander around towns showing lots of flesh. The only exception to this is when staying in the western style hotels, which tend to have greater experience of western fashions. In the summer one can expect hot conditions throughout the day and so dress with this in mind. However, at night the temperature drops rapidly and therefore warm evening wear is advisable. In the winter and autumn months temperatures fluctuate more and a mixture of lighter and warmer clothing is sensible. Only very occasionally does it rain but in the winter it is advisable to bring a raincoat. It is important to ensure you have enough protection from the sun, so hats and sun tan lotion are a must at most times of the year. It is best to bring sturdy footwear especially when visiting tourist sights as they often involve walking of rough terrain. It is not really sensible to wear sandals for visiting these sights as they will not protect you well and can be insulting to some Arab people. Jordan has some amasing scenery and it is understandable to want to take photographs. At most tourist sights there are those who would be willing to steal valuable items such as cameras from unsuspecting western tourists. Therefore where possible be discreet with valuable items. |
