Wadi Rum

Wadi Rum, made famous by the Lawrence of Arabia film, offers something for everyone. It is truly a fantastic place, with stunning landscapes, historical sights, and adventurous activities. Wadi Rum has been the home to Bedouin tribes for thousands of years, and they continue to be an important feature of the desert.

To explore the desert, it is best to employ local guides who tend to congregate around the Rum Resthouse. They will drive you into the desert in their 4x4 and show the best sights. Alternatively you can go on foot or by camel, which is a fantastic experience.

Wadi Rum is well known for its climbing, and for the experienced climber Tony Howard’s books are recommended. You can also hire a guide at the Resthouse who can show you the various routes.

Accomodation in Wadi Rum is either at the Resthouse campsight or in the desert. The desert is amasingly beautiful and safe to stay overnight in, however you will need to ensure that you have plenty of water and supplies to do this. Rum is difficult to get to without having your own transport so hiring a car is best. It is an hour north of Aqaba and is a few miles off the desert highway.
