Dana nature reserve has some of the most rugged, diverse and beautiful scenery, ranging from 1800metre high Sharaa mountains down to Wadi Araba at sea level. Dana protects all animals from hunting and has a number of endangered species including Ibex. The village of Dana borders the nature reserve and is a community that is supported by the tourism that the reserve supplies. It has been inhabited for six thousand years, with people drawn to the region’s fertile land and natural springs.
Dana Nature Reserve has a wide variety of wildlife, including ibex, mountain gazelle, fox, badger, porcupine, wolf, hyrax, striped hyena, and jackal. There are also a number of birds in the reserve. Visitors to Dana can use the designated campsights and the hiking trails. The campsight offers meals, showers, guided walks around the reserve, and tents with mattresses and pillows.
The reserve also operates a guest house with private terraces overlooking the spectacular scenery. It is advisable to make reservations (tel. 03-368-497). Dana’s location makes it ideal to visit on the way to Petra or Shobak castle.
