The Dead Sea is 75 km long and from 6 to 16 km wide and is fed by the River Jordan. The Dead Sea is entirely devoid of plant and animal life. This is due to an extremely high content of salt and other minerals, much higher than normal sea water. This concentration is caused by a rapid rate of evaporation. These minerals give the water curative properties which have been recognized since the days of Herod the Great.
The Dead Sea is "the lowest point on earth," lying 400 meters below sea level. Swimming in the Dead Sea is an unforgettable experience as it is impossible to sink. Swimming in the oily water is also a strange feeling. Why not recreate the pictures of people reading a newspaper whilst floating on their back. The Government Resthouse provides showers and changing facilities, a restaurant, and a stretch of beach. The Marriott, Mövenpick and Dead Sea Spa all have hotels along the Dead Sea coast. They also offer various spa treatments including black mud, highly oxygenous air treatment, filtered sunrays, massage and gymnastics. Just off the coast are a number of Hot Springs which are possible to gorge walk up. The Dead Sea is about 40 minutes from Amman. It is very popular with Jordanians in the summer and can get very congested and lively. It is also exceptionally hot and there are often swarms of flies around in the summer months.
